Introduction :

             Margherita Town is situated at longitude 95deg 40 min, 34 sec East at latitude 17 deg 17 min 18 sec North. It has an average elevation of 139.61 m from MDL.

Margherita is the oldest industrial township in Assam and headquarter town of one of the largest Civil Sub division of our state. The place is well known as the birthplace of Indian tea, coal and wood-based industry. The Margherita Township presently covers over 26913 as per 2011 census. But the present population of the town is more than double of that. The town urgently requires development of urban amenities including water supply system, solid waste management system, storm water drainage system, schemes for development of roads network and needs creation of infrastructure hub for regional economic cooperation between India, Myanmar and China.

History and Growth of Margherita Town

Margherita Town is situated in the south Eastern part of Tinsukia district on NH-38 at a distance of 50.0 Km from Tinsukia town. Margherita town with its enlarged urban potentials is growing presently at a very fast rate. Urbanization started in Margherita before independence but it was declared as a town in January 2003. The railways started in the year 1884 constructed by Assam Railway & Treading Co. Limited and the Railway bridge was supervised by Italian Engineer brothers named Paganini. They also constructed the Margherita Church in the year 1883 in the name of Margaret, the Queen of Italy, and the town consequently came to be known as Margherita in honour of the Queen. The church was renamed as Margaret Union Church in the Year 1984.

The ‘Margherita Town Committee’ was notified on 27.01.2003, but urban growth started hundreds of years ago. The Railway Bridge was constructed in the year 1884 along with the railway station. The Town being strategically located caters to the need of the whole region. Margherita town is 542 km from Guwahati, capital of Assam and has good railways and roadways connectivity, the nearest airport at Mohonbari, Dibrugarh is 85 km away in the south East of the town. The District Headquarter town, Tinsukia is 50 km away from Margherita.

The office of chief General Manager of North East Coal fields of Coal India Limited is situated in this town. The coal fields of this region are in Ledo which is situated about 10 km north of Margherita. Mining of coal is continuing successfully here since long before independence of our country.

Margherita is the sub-divisional headquarter of Margherita sub-division.
